Home Gym Hygiene and the Health Club Jungle
 

 

Good personal hygiene is just common knowledge isn't it? You would think that when you are in the health club that the person who used the equipment before you knows that it is good personal hygiene to wash their hands after using the restroom, changing a baby's diapers or even checking the oil in their car. Making this assumption may not be in the best interest of your own personal hygiene. Allow me to explain:

If you examine the concept of common knowledge you would be forced to acknowledge that it is a relative term. What is common knowledge to you may not be common knowledge to the person that has just finished using the health club equipment before you. For example: let's discuss the recent lawsuits against tobacco companies. The tobacco companies are losing one lawsuit after another because it evidently has just now become common knowledge that inhaling smoke into your lungs over a long (or even a short) period of time may be very detrimental to your health; leading to fatal lung disease such as cancer.
 

Apparently there is now scientific proof of the health risks and this has led modern day smokers to try to lay the blame on tobacco companies for their health problems. But I ask you, isn't it common knowledge that your lungs are supposed to breath air and not smoke? And if it is common knowledge will people refrain from indulging in their unhealthy habits? This has been going on for centuries. For example: illiterate European peasants knew 300 years ago that smoking tobacco often led to a sickness which they referred to as the "consumption" and it was fatal. Knowledge of the health risks didn't stop them from smoking and it hasn't stopped their modern day American descendants either. So ask yourself again does the person who used the equipment before you practice acceptable personal hygiene? I am not so sure.

The health club is aware of this risk and some clubs place disinfectant spray bottles and wash cloths next to the equipment ostensibly so people will use them to wipe down the machines when they are finished. This is a gesture made with good intentions and it may be effective on occasion. However, many times in the past I have picked up those rags and they are soaked through with sweat, disinfectant and who knows what else. I have personally witnessed someone actually blowing their nose on them before; I am not kidding it is one of the most disgusting and thoughtless actions I have ever seen. When you wipe down the equipment you may actually be putting more germs on yourself and on the machine than you are taking off it!

There are myriad health risk possibilities that emerge and spread in the health club. Some of the common ailments you can pick up from health club equipment range from pink eye to the common cold. But what you may find the most satisfying about using your own home gym is that you know where it has been. And best of all you know where you have been!
